Figg Bridge Engineers, Inc.
Susquehanna River Bridge Replacement
Jay Rohleder of Figg Bridge Engineers spoke to almost 50 ABCD /
ASCE members on the design of the Pennsylvania Turnpike’s new
Susquehanna River
Bridge
on
Nov 18, 2004
. The 150 feet spans will total 5900
feet for the main river crossing and this bridge will be
Pennsylvania
’s first segmental prestressed concrete construction project.
The 1279 segments will weigh up to 175 kips each.
The 6000 psi segments will be constructed using the truss launch method
and can be erected at a rate of 2 spans per week.
Preliminary load tests were conducted for the substructure units and
contributed to a significant cost savings. Drilled
Shafts with 6 foot diameters will be used. The
drilled shafts would have been designed more conservatively and larger without
this testing. The team of Kraemer /
Wagman is the winning contractor and will construct the dual 3 lane structures
for $82.4 million.
Mr. Rohleder directed his honorarium to Habitat for
Humanity and the Boy Scouts of America.
